I have realized that the only way I can live in this city is act as though i am about to leave it. As a lover of food, I have decided to make a list of restaurants that I must eat at before my departure.
What are the must-eat-at restaurants in town?
Cheers,

Read Anthony Bourdain's The Nasty Bits. He's a NYC chef and a badass. He talks about all kinds of places to check out from bars to fine dining establishements.
I'm not from NY and I have only been there once but I will be using that book as a guide when i make it back there.

Peter Lugers. Bring an empty stomach...and cash.

i personally think nobu is all over priced and too hyped. but it's that experience you should do once. in any case it's good to try.
oh, shabu tastu is goooood!
i need to try out more places.
- Mahdi0
Almost forgot...Blue Ribbon Sushi.
Cheaper than nobu, and I think, better. The only downfall is you usually have a heft evening wait to get in, but the food is worth it.

If you like Takoyaki try Otafuko, it's pretty good and fun but they don't have any seating besides one bench out front.
They have some tastey Tokyo style Okonomiyaki too.
- tkmeister0
oh, are they moving the current BLT fish location or opening another one?
so rocco doesn't have any restaurant in nyc anymore?

mmmm...S'Mac. That is right by my apartment...it's great, but I overdosed on it when I first moved in. (12th Street between 1st and 2nd I believe).
Be prepard for a generic liquor selection at Chumley's, but its a great "old school New York" style place to have a bit and some drinks.

I second Peter Lugers...
But depending on where your going (unless it's Alaska or Wyoming) you'll probably find similar restaurants that NY has.
So I say stick to the streets. Walk around the city with a friend and every few blocks stop at a food cart. You'll eat everything from knishes to sausages, shishkabob to pretzels. Aside from licking the side walks, that's really what New York tastes like.
