we've had good experience with about 6 Lacie disks, especially when they replaced a 250GB Ethernet Disk that had network problems with a 500GB.

I run FCP on a PowerBook and use a 300GB Seagate firewire drive, its been good to me so far. Seagate uses liquid bearings in some of their drives and they are super quiet.
I will never waste my money on another Maxtor hard drive so long as I live though.

Sometimes you can find a more "cost-effective" solution by buying a desired size hard drive that might be on sale at your local computer store and then buying a quality external hard drive enclosure for it.
Check http://www.newegg.com for some solutions.
I just found out my 80GB external firewire drive has some 'issues'. It houses my mp3's. Needless to say, I'm a bit worried...

Also I have this one (which is a bit older) and it's fantastic too.

I love their look and have had *knock on wood* no problems with them. They're really fast.

Western Digital makes a decent HD-- and they're one of the few companies that still actually manufactures hard drives themselves-- Lacie's decent too, but for price point, I'd still say Western Digital.

i would get a good drive (seagate, western digital, etc.) and put it in an enclosure.
i have a closet full of failed lacie drives, i will never buy from them again.

i was just looking at getting another external, but instead I bought another internal drive for my G5 - 500GB.
