I'd use Word.

there used to be a book series titled "classroom in a book" for lots of programs. Pretty good from what i've heard.

If you're coming from a bitmap background, I'd recommend getting your head around Meshes early on.
NT's Brooke ha s a very useful tutorial at http://www.lifeinvector.com/inde… (bottom of page).
best way to learn Illy, imo, is like you would any graphics program - set yourself a goal, then attempt to render it.
Make friends with the Pen, Pathfinder and Palette tools and you'll be on the right path.

lynda.com offers some good tutorials for illustrator as well as many other programs. I've found them to be helpful.

if you master the pen tool the nyou will have mastered the program...everything else is just fluff.
master all the key commands as well always keep your free hand on the keyboard for ease of quick key commands to save you lots of wasted clicks.
draw, trace and practice.
repeat and chase with large joint preferably of more than 1 type of weed.
