ok, so i am completely stuck in designing a comp for a restaurant/cafe website. the owners are extremely design-savvy (they travel the world for the best restaurants and read wallpaper, frame etc.)..
i showed them this site, which i thought was perhaps somewhere in their field of interest, http://musk.nl/ .
then the owner said he was totally not impressed..
i can't arrange a meeting with them, unless i wait until halloween and thanksgiving are on the same day.
so i will have to do this by myself.
i am either thinking something very illustrative and daring (hip hip hip) but then their place isn't as hip as you would think. it is class and style but not the kind you see in wallpaper imho.. your grandma would go there for a cake and coffee as well..
Soooooooooo...
WTF should i do??

knock out any old crap?

tough situation as always, especially with savvy/opinionated clients, but maybe they were thrown by the topless chick on the first inside page of that Musk site? are they able to get past that and articulate if the design/style of site is appropriate, even if the subject of the site is way off?

you mean old comps?
nah, i don't feel those layouts do justice...
this is why i hate designing for web, you layouts will always fuck up depending on the screensize and calibration of the lowest spec monitor..
*sigh
anyone got some serious inspiration?

it sounds like a tough job
clients with a disconnect between product and expectation, like a homely guy who won't settle for anything short of a uspermodel

and have the shown you any sites that they like?
communicate more, even if you don't have a lot of access to them, and it should help clear up what they want to see

(Aug 7 06, 06:03)blast, cheers..
no, they would not have been thrown off, in fact these people (the owners) are the ones that actually furthered the acceptance of the gay scene in this region.. they used to have this fantastic club (rip :( ) which would have these stylish erotica parties etc..
so they would appreciate that..
so that's why i am puzzled.
they just say; you make us a website. we don't like that one. period.
no motivations. :(

i tell you, nigh impossible.
but i may try, *again.
(they can be very irritated if you even approach them for an appointment, guess their agenda's are too loaded, as they own a lot more places..)
ps. the owners have been friends for a loooooooooong while and in private we're all happy and ok.. and mostly drunk.. so that does not help much..

in my experience this lack of communication bodes ill for the future of the project
get 50% non refundable advance, used as kill fee in event of non completion

(Aug 7 06, 06:09)i am in dire need of the money..now.
but i don't ask the fee until we agreed on a working concept.
that's how i work and that's how my clients expect it to be..

Unfortunatly you are just going to have to come up with another idea..... hence your problem no doubt. Have you got lots on your plate so you can't give it much attention?. If so try to clear those projects to give you room to think of new ideas.

sorry, didn't realize they were friends when I wrote this

if he's into wallpaper and frame, maybe this is the kind of style he prefer...
- ********0
how about showing them ten different websites (not necessarily even restaurants, include hotels, clubs, architects, etc) that you like for different reasons, and seeing which one they prefer? This might inspire a little better articulation on their parts

sorry, my unhelpful comment was supposed to read - imitate their style and don't lose sleep.

Why not do a number of mood boards, for layout, typography, market, etc...and get them to fedback on that. "Much better than firing rockets into an open sky" - Confucious

i'm not impressed with that site either .. but mainly because of the colors
in this situation i would please myself because i would then be able to express my enthusiasm and feel strong about my work
