my parents only think i'm successful if they see a site i helped with advertised in a magazine or shirts i designed on tv.
other than that all i hear is "get a job"

I thinnk that in college though, everyting's so hypothetical – so parents can think that you're not really 'studying' if you're just doing graphics etc – and constantly saying that "The grades aren't THAT important"
The best thing about leaving college and working in design is seeing people who did 'real' degrees like english literature of history, working in call centres and living with their parents.
Vocational degrees =1
Academia = 0

Parents are pretty interested in if your field can give you access to jobs in the future though. A lot of the time they will think that design doesn't lead anywhere.

dad's friend: "So, what does he do now?"
dad: "he's a designer with internets and, you know..."
dad's friend: "like with computers"
dad: "i dont know who he got it from. see, when you or me see a chair in a room, we see a chair in the room. but he sees something other than just a chair"
dad's friend: "want another beer?"

I remember showing one fo my dad's friends my new G4 with the studio monitor and just opening it up to OS9...he was "Oooh, that IS special! What can it do?". I didn't have any software on it so was just sat there typing words into teh easy talk function. He fucking loved it!
