To 'get proper' is a shortened version of to become 'prim and proper' in other words to become formal. It would be used where somebody changes their demeanour from informal and relaxed to more 'starchy' and pedantic about the niceties.

that's the beauty of slang. you make it up as you go along. enter it, enter it! i'd love to see it sweep the nation. a household term, particularly juicy as 'getting proper' in the original sense does mean getting 'gussied up' as it were, rather than 'getting it up the gussie.'
