I am thinking of doing a flash project--the clent wants a map of the US to be shown in their lobby on flatscreen. The map will show a new data point (with an animated icon) that appears every few seconds somewhere in the US that corresponds to their users. At the same time there will be an info window with some basic info about the user. So it'll be xml info. But in terms of where the data points appear, i'm guessing that i'd need some kind of 3rd party map coordinate plug in to do it by zip code or something...has anyone used anything like this? Is it really difficult?

You can use a service like that and calculate the approximate lat/lon on the map.

this can be done w/ Plone and a default plug-in that will do that, and/or full scale GPS w/ z-axis coordinates as well. this can be pushed out in whatever form you like and then sniffed by your .swf on load.

nah, you don't need 3rd party software. just write your own.
i did this exact thing for a motorcycle trip i took cross country, and added Long/Lat coordinates from my GPS to an xml file.
the flash just reads the xml file and runs the coords through a translation function i wrote:
