Why do colour values shift when you save images from Photoshop as PNG? Choose a random HEX value and make a web page with that background, then make a solid square image in Photoshop with that same HEX value as fill colour. Save one copy as a GIF and another as a PNG (8 or 24, doesn't matter).
Put them side-by-side on the page and look at the colours. The GIF should blend right in and be "invisible", but the PNG image sticks out like a sore thumb.
here's an example page:

try using Fireworks or Imageready to optimize.
PS Sucks ass at saving for web

Just tried saving from ImageReady and it makes no difference. My colleague didn't see much difference on his monitor. He then tried saving the same images from Fireworks and there's absolutely no difference in the colours. Could it have something to do with my monitor calibration or my colour profiles in Photoshop?

fifty... your last post was confusing...
... imageReady & fireworks BOTH worked correctly?
meaning - the png compression matched the hexidecimal. :)

Sorry, the results after saving from ImageReady are the same as saving for web from Photoshop. the PNG and GIF look totally different on my monitor.
My colleague tried Fireworks and they match perfectly. It could be a Photoshop problem, but I don't understand why a HEX value in a GIF can all of a sudden just change to a different output colour just because I'm saving as a PNG.

yeah, I get the difference too, and I'm sure I've seen it happen to me before at some point also. I'm as confused as you are...

from something I just read in another forum:
"The key point here is that you should convert and web-destined images to sRGB before running Save for Web. If you'd rather not change your color settings, use Image > Mode > Convert to Profile and select sRGB before you save out the image."
i'm gonna test that... ya'll test that too. :)

Just tried it. Still doesn't look right:

haha... sorry... but now your .gif file is darker than your background... is it supposed to be? QQ

Looks fine to me. the GIF should blend into the background. Actually, BOTH of them should, but the PNG is shifted in colour. On my colleague's monitor it looks slightly yellower, and on mine it's looks closer to white.

Looks fine for me too. (Mac.Safari)
You can lock background hex colours for Gif's in FW, pretty sure you can for PNG's too. Try that.

my guess is the photoshop gamma correction bug.
bit more info here:
http://www.evolt.org/article/To_…FW for PNG is the way to go.

I'd rather not switch over to FW just for the sake of making PNGs. I just wish I understood *why* PS screws up making PNGs

Other solution: in PS Color Settings (Advanced) > Blend RGB Colors Using Gamma > Set to half of what it was (probably 1,0)
change it back afterwards though
