My mac crashed and i cant even log in safe mode, the only option available is to install the os again.
Now, my question is that if i choose Archive and install, will it delete some files ?, It says it will move my system files to another folder, but for example is my desktop included there ?, i have most of my files in the desktop and cant afford losing them.
So is it safe to just install it again and choose that option ?

I'm semi-certain your Desktop files will be intact. But maybe someone else will chime in to support this.

i would try disk warrior before going through the hassle of reinstalling.
if you can't even boot it, what is the likelyhood that it will even see your old install at all?

Did you try to reboot from the cd?
Also see if are able to create a new profile, be rebootign from cd.I had a problem once where I couln't log in as well, but then tried a different profile (I have 2) and it worked out perfect.
then you can back up all your files and take it to the apple store.

it wont get past the gray screen..
so i tried the install disk and then used disk utility and at least the disk is fine.
i think it should work like in windows, if you install it again it will put ur profile files in another folder without deleting them....i hope..

I second acescence's Diskwarrior suggestion.

if you wanna get your files off the box before you start installing things, just to make absolutely sure they're backed up, get a firewire cable, shut down the afflicted computer, hook it up to another box with the firewire cable and put it in 'target' mode by holding down 'T' on the keyboard while you start up your bad box. This will essentially just turn it into a harddrive, letting you grab whatever you like off it before you go around doing complete reinstalls and potentially losing everything.
