How many of you that have full time jobs telecommute? Have any of you sucessfully negotiated that after being hired?
- blaw0
my previous job let me telecommute two days per month. by the time i left i had negotiated up to four days per month (which wasn't enough and was one factor towards my decision to leave).

Yes, and yes. 4 years in-house and I simply asked (but with a detailed plan of communication, and reporting). We chose to do a few days a week as a test and then slowly moved it to full time. It's funny 'cause I'm in the "real" office today for the first time in a few months.

3 days in 2 days from home. Part of my deal before I got hired. It's a 50-60 min commute to my office which blows but it's in the mtns and not the city. Has worked out nice for a year now. I actually seem to get more done at home. What sucks is when 5pm comes around and you are still in pajamas and haven't showered.

hey up how did approach your boss... i've been wanting to telecommute now for awhile... its takes me about an hour+ to get to work and it would be awesome to work from home one in awhile.

Well, both the partners were down from the beginning. They understood the commute and they hunted me down so i had some leverage to work with. I always said if I am going to be behind my monitors with headphones on...what's the difference if I am in the office or at home? I also said if there is a need for me to be there in person for a meeting etc...I would have no problems showing up.

Nice! ya i used to work one day a week from home when i was part-time, but since they put me on full-time it changed... i'm gonna try to talk to the boss and see if i can get the gig again! =)

Between, IM, Web Cams, FTP servers, etc... Almost everything can be taken care of from home. So, play the "use of available technology card". After a month of producing efficient work from home my boss was confident that I was on my game and he seems happy with the deal. It's so nice to be a home more often. My quality of life has gone up and I can take care of little things on my break that would not be possible otherwise.

The only thing I miss is the casual conversation, and the creative stimuls of a design shop. That's why I have adopted you all. NT has become my virtual watercooler.

2 or 3 days a month. Been doing that for like 5 years now. Run into problems here and there, but only because of the limited scope of me working from home. If it were FT I would have all of the problems worked out.

been doing it full-time for 3 years now with clients globally. just as zombie (hey man!) put it- w/ all communication tools available, it is really a matter of your employers and/or clients comfort level.
dowit.

I am about to ask m y manager about this soon. My commute was already pushing it. Now there is so much construction going on that it is almost impossible to get to work. In addition to that they are going to shut down the major central interstate this spring for a 5 year upgrade.
It seems crazy that more companies aren't doing this considering the technological capability and the benefits to society that telecommuting can bring.
Maybe there should be incentives for companies that allow it. It would be great for the environment, the roadways, congestion, gas savings, etc.

plus it is awesome being able to break off for 30 minutes to go ride your bike at 10am.

yeah, its annoying cos i think they would allow me to work from home but
b/c techincal issues i think it would be more stressful to work at home

It would be great to be able to stop for some exercise at any time during the day.

it is great, sometimes I get a bit caged feeling when I work from home, but I think that would be easily remedied if I did it more often.
The benefit to the employer is that you are always at the office.
