Identity designers (especially in the UK): is the 'with compliments' card a standard part of a corporate stationery set in the UK? We don't use them here, but I've come across a few clients in the UK who've asked for them... is it still common, or is it an old-fashioned stationery item?
Oh, and is it in use throughout Europe? Much thanks...

Yes a 'compliments slip' as it's normally known is a standard part of stationery (along with letterhead and business card - and if you're feeling swanky a continuation page and envelope oh and mailing labels)
A complients slip is 1/3 of an A4 in the UK ie 210mm x 99mm.
In the US it's also 1/3 of their paper size.
having just done a big worldwide rebrand I've done a lot of different types of stationery

cool, thanks guys – and I'm sure I could dig this up elsewhere, but as someone who's done endless letterhead, b-cards, envelopes, mailing label sets w/out a compliments slip, what's the purpose? Is it something to throw in with a folded letterhead into an envelope? Is it for a hand-written message? In the US, we'll do personal stationery at 5.5 x 8.5 in. for that purpose...
I feel so un-worldly.

a comp slip can be to slip into a large package to let them know who it's from, it can also be used for short messages to the recipient etc.
I find them useful when sending some proofs or something to a client. I can write some polite message on one like
"please find enclosed the colour proofs, etc.." but I don't have to write a letter.

I'm making 'Pile of Cunt' slips instead of 'Compliment' slips, I think they will make my business more personal, y'know.

yes, but i find them a waste of paper. fortunately i never had to make one..
- Baskerville0
of course they are a waste of paper, especially if you don't even write on them. But it looks more professional that puting a post-it in with something.

I never ask what the purpose is of something i'm designing, i just do it, ya know, like, just design, man...

well, let's call a spade a spade here, why do I need to know if I'm just gonna use left-justified, tightly-kerned Helvetica Bold anyways, yeah?
