For a flash based website,
Whats the maximum intial load size (in kb) you guys would go for a preload? How about a maximum for a whole site?

how long is a piece of string?!
it all depends on
- what content is on each page
- does it contain music/video
- who your target audience is (if someone is expecting rich content then theyl be willing to be patient)The best way to go building a site is to build a base movie first. this may load in the base content like the navigation and maybe the text content for each section.
Then for additional content like images/music/video create seperate movies that you load in to the main movie.
This way, when a user comes to the site the site will load up very quickly and this will contain MOST of the information that theyl need ... then the secondary information will load in.

I just finished a flash site that was 27Mb. My boss shat the bed when he saw his bandwidth charges.
I would say 500k initial load max though.

most people are on broadband these days so i reckon skt's suggestion of 500k initial load max is a decent shout cos that'd zip by quick enough.
but for those on slower connections, give them something to play with or a nice animation to watch as it loads.

But yeah, kon is right... make your loaders pretty.

I agree with the play thing:
Once, while loading, a design school in Barcelona put Pong as preloader.Well... the game was more interesting than the site.
So pay attention.
