Soooo...a particularly valuable external hard drive fell of my desktop and onto the floor, thereby crashing the discs. Yeah, not good.
What are my options? Geek Squad? CompUSA? How can I save my data?

Unfortunately the only help I can give to this is a bump.

My friends harddrive in his powerbook died one day and the drive got messed up... there are companies that specifically get the info back and put it in another disk... try google for a place in your area

get it to a data recovery place asap - do not power it up, the longer it is on the more data you will lose.
good luck

fyi disk recovery highly expensive in some cases

(Jul 7 06, 09:17)my laptop crashed the other day and it would turn on, but wouldn't stay on for more than 3 minutes. then when I brought it to the place it didn't turn on at all, so I also suggest that you get your drive to a place to get it looked at ASAP, and don't do anything to it yourself.

Oh yea, I second the DON'T DO ANYTHING.
Because I forgot I had hard drive crash at work and I kept rebooting and stuff like a moron, and was trying to quickly burn stuff off until one of the IT guys came by and was flipping out that I did absolutely everything wrong.
...
They gave me a network drive, dvd-writer, and a new computer out of the mix.
So maybe I did know what I was doing.

Okay guys, I'm gonna run over to CompUSA or BestBuy and see what they can do or who they recommend.
Thanks!

lets hope you are not fucked.

I'm still waiting to hear from the repair place.
I think I'll have a good cry if my info is lost...

(Jul 7 06, 09:32)they will just sell you a new drive. They don't offer data recovery... at least i don't think so. I'm pretty sure best buy does not have a clean room for hard drive surgery.

yeah don't go to best buy or compusa. they have no idea what they are doing. go to a specialist.

Yah, BestBuy and CompUSA both tried to mount the drive but couldn't...so they both referred me to the same place, which is supposedely ridiculoso expensive.
I'm gonna give them a jingle-jangle now...I'll let you know!

Sooo...I have called four different places, including the one referred to by both bestbuy and compusa.
To recover my files from a 250 GB hard drive, it will cost between $900-1500. Quotes came in at a floor of $500 and a ceiling of $2500...all variable based on what procedures they run and how much they can recover. Thought i'd let you all know!
So basically it's my old video files, or a new laptop/video camera/whatever. Hmmmmmm.........
