Think about it, they are placing racial tension at the service of selling game consoles. What an arrogant decision that is. Then, like cowards, they basically say that the controversy is a reflection of society and not part of their original intention. It's bullshit.

Well, yes, Sony obviously knows what they're doing.
EVERYTHING in advertising is intentional.

Mimio
(Jul 6 06, 13:40)disagreed.
controversy is indeed and always a reflection of (conteporary) society.
no doubt about it.

Jaline
(Jul 6 06, 13:41)true that, BUT sometimes the intentional bit sort of flies beyond achievement, ie society can change or is not ready for it or demographic reasons make it not communicate etc etc..

(Jul 6 06, 13:45)d'you just call me fat mother fucker?
*re-reads
you mis-spelled fattered.
- Mimio0
You're misunderstanding me. I'm saying that the controversy is part of their intention. It's a given really, they're provoking the response for effect.

Thought 2:
This seems to have worked for Dave Chappelle, although he didnt make excuses and walked away ( a rich man).
- k0na_an0k0
Like when Abercrombie puts out their catalog and everyone plays the fun game 'find the black guy' to get everyone up in arms?!?
And you see what that did for them?
And where did that go? No where. Everytime one comes out people bitch for like a week then it's old news. Sit on it for a while and it will dawn on you how minor this is.

I doubt it, I still think the Benetton stuff was in poor taste and severely disingenuous.

Mimio
(Jul 6 06, 13:50)in a way yes. but how far would they be willing to go with this? i mean, was this really only tailored for the dutch market??
- Jaline0
Mimio, you're not one for controversy at all, are you?

Dave Chappelle is a comedian (an artist). It's his job to provoke and provide social commentary. He's selling himself as a performer. Big difference. He also doesn't hide from criticism, he's unapologetically a comedian.
- Mimio0
Jaline, it's not that, I'm just adamantly against corporations being part of the social discourse. Because fundamentally they're sociopathic.
- Jaline0
You have some good points. I just don't care if they decide to keep the ad up for a long time.
