Nice piece of work... although its annoying when you go from scrolling to not scrolling as everythng shifts...
We did this for http://www.the-mill.com where the page doesn't go to a new page but just changes the size of the flash movie... but always make sure it is 1 pixel longer than the page so that the scrollbars stay on

Flash scrollers are fine and I rather like them, I honestly would rather scroll in a nice way withina lovely well designed window that have to scroll the whole of my page like in the site you posted engage only to see my main graphic and site dissappear above me as I read shit loads of red text at the bottom.

except half of them don't work properly
- chossy0
Then people shouldn't employ bad coders or whatever to do their site.

I think that is the point of that article though... but i get what you mean
- chossy0
who cares I didnae read it he he ;)
I just like to see personal and or little design touches on every aspect of a site it really makes me 'engage' :) with the site designer makes me realise part of their personality, Besides hoss's shop in Edinburgh is overpriced so screw him he he ;) only joking. I've never been in it may be a bargain in there.

I like using my scroll wheel on a flash site for a change..
- Rand0
I couldn't figure out how to make that work for anything other than a paragraph of dynamic text
- rafalski0
Will use both, depending on design. Useful for sites that require non-flash feel though.
Still, I don't like swfobject, it's way too much code for a simple flash embed script.

i hate its guts

flash's guts?

i think some flash text scrollers have their place - as long as they are useable..
and aye, hoss's shop is around wherever someone said it was around. called oddballmall its mostly bmx stuff.

Aye my shop's Odd Ball Mall in Edinburgh, and chossy you'll be delighted to know that we're doing a 20% off everything sale on our online store at http://obmx.co.uk - the only thing we're overly pricey for is Threadless tees becuase by the time we pay for large amounts of shipping and then all the taxes to Customs & Excise they work out the same price as buying a Howies tee. Better buying Threadless direct (if you're prepred to wait for it to be delivered).

Rand - I'd be happy to answer any questions you have about getting it to work on more than the one text box. Mail me at

I agree that there are times when an internal Flash scroller is a more appropriate solution as dictated by the overall design. Unfortunately these are often badly built and often aren't coded to react to the mouse scroller.
This prototype is just another option when considering how to deliver a site's content.
The really clever stuff is actually in the LayoutManager class which allows you to very simply position content in a resizing swf (including a fullscreen swf) relative to any corner or side of the browser window.
It's in com/flamjam/utilities/LayoutMana...
Hoss.
