I share my appartmnet with my brother who constantly is downloading some shit to his computer of the internet using p2p networks. For that reason speeds of the internet on my computer are close to dial-up. Is there some way that we can split the signal coming from the router so that he only gets half teh bandwith???

it's possibly your isp throttling your bandwidth because of the ports that the traffic is on.
I've heard that they also do this with apps like skype to try and encourage you to go for their VoIP services.
that said I am at the moment only connected to the internets by virtue of a neighbour who was thoughtful enough not to protect his wireless :)

no, i'm sure it's the app. sometimes he leaves it on in his room and whne i disconect that shit the connection is fast again.

when you disconnect it those ports have no traffic and you get the proper speeds again from your isp, think it through.

Just tell him. Or you could have designated internet usage times, which completely failed in my house. It sucks, but you could either bully him or get more time-based with how you two use the internet. Also, he doesn't have the right to hog everything anyway.

If you have a linksys router. there is a option for QOS which stands for quality of service.
The main purpose of this is to ensure that data is available for certain computers (Voip phones, servers, etc..)
you could set "Device Priority" and enter your PC as HIGH Priority and set your brothers as LOW.
Think of it as your own personal VIP pass to the internet.
