Hello NTers
My girlfriend and I have just arrived in NYC from Montreal on Nafta Visas. We have regular work already lined up, and we're looking for an apartment for the 1st.
Ideally we'd like to share with some people with similar interests and/or occupation, so we're wondering if anyone here has a reference for us as time is short.
This is what we do:

http://newyork.craigslist.org is always helpful. check the housing section. i wish you the best on the apartment hunt, not to discourage you... but it's always a pain in the ass.
i'd be curious to know... why would you be moving from montreal to nyc? i'm actually thinking on moving to montreal with my wife.
:)
IT'S GREAT TO HAVE YOU, WELCOME!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the kind words guys.
Yeah, we're coming down on work visas, we'll see if we like living here after a year is up, but having visited and stayed before, I'd say we're quite fond of the city.
We've started Craigslisting, looked at a few neighborhoods, leaning towards the areas in Brooklyn around Park Slope right now, since broker fees are insane in Manhattan :)
Montreal was great, but after 10 years there we need a change... The clean air and relaxed atmosphere was great, but it's also a smaller city and there aren't too many interesting contracts...
Love to grab beers with you all once we're settled in,
Cheers!

* July 7 to August 7 Sublet Available: Southside Williamsburg, close
to Bedford L/Marcy JMZ. $700 for whole month or pro-rated for 2 or 3
weeks, all utilities included. Great location, charming decrepit
comfortable apartment with Tivo and full cable, wireless internet, a/
c. Must like cats, there are two that my roommate will be caring for,
but they will try to love on you, be prepared. Roommate is super
awesome, bedrooms on opposite ends of house for privacy, plus she
works full-time. Did I mention how awesome she is? Perfect situation
for 1 person who likes being able to walk to grocery stores, the best
burgers in NYC (Dumont Burger hands down, or runner up Peter Luger),
friendly local wine store, Grand St. Park and a million very good
bars, shops, and restaurants. Contact Alita,
, ASAP.* 1 bedroom available in Williamsburg, $1000. South 4th and Wythe,
starting July 1 (for summer or full year). In three bedroom duplex
apartment. Other two bedrooms taken by a male and female Oberlin and
NYU grad, one a performance artist/sustainability consultant, other a
med student -- early 20s, friends who love nonsensenyc: artists,
liberal, intellectuals, energetic. 12 minute average walk to the
Bedford L stop. We move in on July 1st and split the $3000 rent -- no
broker fee. Just $1000/month per person plus utilities. Laundry
(quarter operated) in the building. Roof access with a killer post-
industrial view of the bridge and the river. the living room /
spacious kitchen is in a large loft-like space, super high ceilings,
skylights and more space than we know what to do with. We could
project movies on the wall. There is a black cast iron staircase
leading up to a long balcony that overlooks the living room. We'll
cover the balcony with plants. All three tenants will move in
together on July 1 and decorate together and make this place our
home. Contact Emily, with a little about yourself.* Seeking girlish roommate for huge Park Slope three bedroom. Move in
date July 15 or August 1, $800. One smallish bedroom available.
Hardwood floors, tin ceilings, big kitchen, dining room, enormous
living room. We're located a single block to the park and subway, on
an amazing tree and baby-lined street. The bedroom is on the small
side, big enough for a full size bed and dresser, but not much else.
It does, however, have a weird closet. We are two men in our late
20s/ early 30s, looking ideally for a woman. Don't worry, we're not
looking for a Wendy to our Lost Boys, we just don't want our place to
be a bachelor pad. We are a designer and a filmmaker, and we work
partially from home, so ideally, you should do your work elsewhere,
just so we don't all go crazy together. However, you'll frequently
have the digs to yourself in the evenings. We're both creative types,
so we imagine a similar profile for you. Contact
