what purpose does the DOCTYPE tag at the top of a html document serve?
i ask because i've had to remove it so that firefox displays my flash site properly. will it cause any problems not having it???
- joyride0
was it set to strict? try transitional that usually works
- krust0
it's purely a flash site so i'm guessing i wont need any 'W3C html validation' business init???
seems to work just fine without it.
- krust0
and it was transitional.
i had 2 issues, i had to get rid of scrollbars in ie (mac) so i added a body style tag to hide the overflow
but that fucked my firefox up (it cut the site off near the top).so removing it seems to solve everything!

i never know which one to put, i usually just put html..it never validates..but i dont really care much.

whats the purpose of validating it? i dont geddit. why does my website need to be validated? by who?

Document Type Decleration - your telling the browser(client) what sort of document your giving it and to what standard, it might be RSS(XML), HTML, XML, etc
The point of validating is being assured the browser/client will parse(read) yr site how you intended. If it doesnt validate or the doctype has to be removed - then this usually means that the way you have written yr code doesnt match the 'type' of document you told the browser it was through the doc type.
http://www.w3c.org and search for doc types
like someone siad earlier dont worry too much about it and use a 'loose' version

it's fine with me and prob most of us if you choose not to heed the advice of the w3c.
if the industry would listen to them cross-browser compatibility issues would vanish
we will all have issues until ff, ie, and safari all use the same rendering engines for flash, html, etc.
supporting them is better for everyone including yourself

it aint better if it makes my site not work!

i'll worry about the DOCYTYPE when it fucks up my design..otherwise..whatever.
