Anybody know if there are any type requirements for the application of a formal ™ on a trademarked logo? Like typeface, point size etc?
Everybody uses a sans all-caps Arial or Helvetica or something, and it's consistent enough to make me think there are design requirements coming down from the USPTO...anybody have experience with this?
Please save me from having to dig through the mess of the USPTO website!

I don't think there are size or placement requirements as such. I was just sent a logo pack for Konami and they have the TM sized and placed differently depending on what size the actual logo is to be displayed at.
The face does seem to be consistent though.

if your using a legit typeface - they usually have the "™" mark in the glyphs palette.

What radar said. But legibility trumps everything. So avoid the "ravie" font. ;)

yeah, I've got an identity that the client has trademarked, and we need to do multiple placements based on horizontal vs. vertical etc... but the typeface is stylized and I'd like to avoid the drab arial if possible

I've never seen it used anywhere in anything other than a sans serif. That's not to say you can't though...

it def. won't by hyper-stylized, as it obviously shouldn't draw away attention from the rest of the mark
but this seems like one of those things that is done a certain way just because it's always been done that way

you can do whatever you want to it. i would make sure its no smaller than 6pt at the smallest size for legibility's sake.

thanks johnd – that's what I was hoping to hear...as long as there's no USPTO mandate like "must be Ariel or Helvetica, all-caps, set in black, etc."
