just a quick one, sorry if i'm not awake when the answer comes...
i need to batch a number of images (about 5mb each) down to a web-managable size.
i want them to end up at 72dpi and 500px at the widest point. meaning, i want them to maintain either their landscape or portrait orientation, and then be saved for web in a folder...
i'm an idiot with actions and batching. can someone talk me through this?
tia,

like this
have your folder of images
make a destination folder somewere
open ps
start new action
open one of the files in your pile to be batched
change the width to 500 with fixed aspect ration
save to web into new destination folder
close image
when asked to save changes say no
stop action recordingin ps
file > automate > batch
select action you just wrote
choose folder to work from
startall images will be ready and waiting for you in the new destination folder that the image was saved to web in when writing the action
voila

i think that if you need to lower the dpi to 72, you should do that in the action before resizing it.
- version30
yeah i skipped over that detail but i think the basics are there for them to work off of
so before you size the width to 500 lower the dpi to 72 then set width as 500
other than that everything else is on point

hrm...
it keeps doing the first one over and over again. asking me to overwrite the initial version.
where did i go wrong?
(the subsequent images in the folder batch along just fine...)
- paraselene0
yeah, i figured that with the 72 dpi. my only problem is the last thing i posted...
- version30
it should rewrite that first one just once since you used it to write the action, after that it should continue on its way
- version30
it's checking the overwrite because the file name is the same
- paraselene0
odd. i even took that first one out of the originals folder and it's still doing it.
- version30
oh i know why, its my bad
you'll need to write another action with what you learned already.
just already have the file open before you start recording
the problem is the action has been recorded with you opening up that specific file name
my bad on the directions

wicked. cheers. rookie error!

sidenote-
i suggest not having nt open in firefox ans it is ram intensive and will slow your batching immensely
though if you are at work, this makes a great reason to be on nt, as you are waiting for the batching to finish ;)

that doesn't matter on my machine here at home. it's a fucking beastie!
- version30
than you are luckier than I ;)
I'm assuming everything is sorted and working properly now?
