"Too often we under estimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around."

ASU. This class is GRA 221. There are prereqs that I did not take as well. Basically, a sohpomore class. It's a major only class and graphic design doesn't usually lallow non majors into their classes. After months of convincing, they let me into GRA 221 and 222 WITHOUT the prereqs. That is why I am a little timid about it.

what about the truth?
has it ever done anyone harm they didn't deserve
whatever happened to reality?
- version30
seriously, how does tracing help?
so you could see the shape with your eyes and you can still see it through the tracing paper then you trace it
where is the "learning"?
where is the try and fail? where is the compare and contrast of all the things you make?
you should have a pile of stuff to go through and some should be good others will suck but you should make them all then decide what you do or don't like about what YOU did
that is learning, that is trying

yo V3, no need to get worked up
I traced shit when I was 8, and it helped me develop drawing skills before I knew what a graphic designer was
I don't think anyone's promoting tracing as a creative process

A lot of people have no experience before such a class. It is fun, you will enjoy and improve... it is really one of the most important classes to take.
- studderine0
true. but the kids in the class will all have exp. except for me. they have had a whole year of design. me=nothing. but i will take it in stride...i just wanted suggestions, not stupid little arguments.

studderine – I went to U of A down in Tucson, and we used to come up to Phoenix for the design lecture series at ASU
it's ambitous to jump in, especially without the foundation courses, but you'll be fine. our intro to type class came after drawing, composition, color theory, and intro to design classes, but it was all new to me just the same
the 'study' of typography is more analytical than creative, so it might be right up your alley

blastov 8 is different than a few weeks before class
do you seriously not see the BS exceuses pouring out of this kids mouth at class
"sorry teach, i didn't do it because the first thing i drew wasn't the coolest thing i'd ever seen. apparantly i'm not good enough, so i quit before i started"
and kinda sorta do i think i should be all worked up because this is a graphic design forum and someone is whining about not knowing how to draw, not having trouble with an aspect of design, but coming across as fearful of putting pencil to paper
in the half hour this thread has been up he could have drawn every character on his keyboard, but he won't because he is expecting someone to come through with a "make it simple" tip or trick
- studderine0
blastofv - thanks! how are the u of a design courses?
- studderine0
im not looking for the make it simple trick buddy. im looking for ideas, suggestions, HOW TO BETTER MYSELF. You once were helpful, now you're just an ass.

you don't know this guy any better than I know you, so what's with all the anger over how you think he might behave in class next fall?
- studderine0
After work (student worker..plenty of free time)I am off to the art store to buy supplies. Thanks for the help guys!

(Jun 1 06, 09:55)Thanks blastofv. We all have different ways of learning.
Oh and by the way v3, Doyald Young, one of the best type designers living, recommends that his students copy letterforms over and over to understand the curves, spaces, etc...

hey guy, why so angry?
- grunttt0
version3 traces letters and comic books.
- blastofv0
damnit, I'm getting sucked in
and it's pointless
studderine – the U of A program was good when I was there, and it's getting stronger with a more rigid review process (they hack people out of the program if they aren't up to par each year)
great faculty too
- version30
who's angry?
all i was saying is i'd rather draw 100 things you don't like than trace 1 piece that you do like
anyway, start learning from someone you might listen to/read

Yes, the ASU program hacks people in 2 years. Thankfully I'm only doing it as a minor. I just want to enhance my visual literacy because I think I'm good with the tech. aspects of design, but not so great with the visual aspects.
- blastofv0
right on – sounds like a good approach, and you'll do fine
good luck
