just heard an interesting debate on NPR...as always, both sides seem overzealous and it's hard to pick out fact from propaganda...
anybody know of any 'neutral' reports on how things would/might be affected if net neutrality gets squashed?

what do you mean by "net neutrality"?

well I'm new to the debate myself, but it may affect us all – 'net neutrality' is a movement to keep the infrastructure that feeds the internet (cables and fiberoptics etc.) democratic...so that all information is equally accessible to the world at large
the opposing side is represented by the cable/internet service providers, who want to charge premium rates to companies with dough for 'faster lanes on the internet super highway' for premium content – effectively bringing market forces into the mix and allowing big companies to drown out the little guys for things like streaming hidef TV/video...
or so the propaganda goes...I'm sure someone else on here could do a better job explaining

Fuck that corporate bumrush. No need for corporate ownership. In fact in most cases corporations are standing in the way of free (or lowcost) faster public internet access.

I read that google wants everyone to have free wireless broadband, city-wide.
They might start the scheme in san francisco.

That's one of the infrastructure specific battles. Wifi-max etc vs. warner/comcast, Most state governments are fighting to de-monopolize and use free wireless access points..

I love google. Chinese censorship controversy and all. Their core mission is to bring ALL of the worlds information to our fingertips, and if they want to hook up free WiFi for the masses, even better.
I wonder if we're too comfortable with the freedoms we currently enjoy online though... big business (and big lobbying efforts) could make a big mess of the worlds most egalitarian creation ever.
