I would think that places like borders and starbucks would offer free wifi as an incentive to customers. I don't know who would pay $29/mo considering you can get dsl/cable at your place for less...
end rant.

There might be a few reasons for it, depending on how much thought they put into mixing wifi into their marketing strategy.
- just because so
- some peeps still consider starbucks a fancy place, and sitting there with a laptop and a $30 connection is a show off
- to tie you to the place
- none of the above

I pay more like $17/mth for unlimited use at Caffe Nero (its my 'second office')... but thats still way too much... seems like each network has a monopoly for a cafe chain?
It will get better, at a Starbucks I recently saw 2 commercial networks and about 10 other (closed) networks where previously there was only one network visible...usage is way up, the pricing just has to catch up...
or maybe they don't want their cafes full of laptops?

you tend to get people in there for hours nursing lattes using the place as an office/meeting place.

if it was too cheap the place would be fll of people who should stay at home anyway... and the bandwidth would get lower.

--Sure they don't want to keep people whole day there on a small latte.
I like Mcdonalds solution in Dublin: you get a 30 mins coupon with a purchase.

... and they dont even like you sitting there with your trousers round your ankles while watching porn online :(
- what else you meant to do to pass the hours away?!

Seagulling your laptop in Mcdonalds is not a good look.

I always order a black coffee whenever I want a latté

After paying $5 for a cup of coffee at Starbucks, I think paying $30 a month for wifi is ridiculous.
Panera Bread is a much better hangout -- they have better food and free wifi.
