I more used to using the auto select layer click box so you can just click on whatever you see and it goes to that layer.
there isin't a shorcut for that, right?

I think he is confused because he wants to see the checkbox goes on and off while he is doing ctrl click.
do it like this: uncheck the box.
then if you want to select certain layer ctrl click on to that, viola you are there.
