I have a freelance client whom I've done a lot of work for over the past few years and they want to know a flat rate for the layout of an 86-page book - they say they have the photos and the grid ready , so does anyone have suggestions on how I would price this based on our current rate? I do mostly small print and interactive, so I don't really know the going rate for such a project.

figure high number and low number of hours per spread - average that number and multiply by 86 x $

or just say 10K

what radar said.

they already have the photos and the grid? does that mean you're working on existing master pages, or they just know how they want it organized, and you still have to design it...? are the font styles established? are the photos prepared for print output or are you going to need to retouch/color correct them all?
get the full details, estimate the hours, then add 25% of those hours on top of the total because you will almost definitely go over – especially if you haven't done this sort of project before...
these layout projects can be a nightmare – oh, and are you going to handle (and markup) the production?
sounds like you have to mesh this estimate with the sort of money they're used to paying you for smaller projects, so maybe you can make it up with the printing

Sorry, should have been more specific. These things are already done / decided:
Grid, master pages, font styles, photo editing (mostly), they'll handle prepress
....no need to reply though, I have some time to stew over it and have plenty of freelance contracts under my belt I'll be fine... just curious as to what everyone here thought.
10k though is too high.
