I do mainly motion graphics. But I have a client who I'm creating a print campaign for. The biggest size they have planned for is large billboards. Yet they want the comped files at almost 3.5 times the resolution, "just in case". So, Is this normal. Seems like huge overkill. The files take 15+ minutes to open/save. And I have 15 to put together by Wed. Not to mention the stock/shot photos they providing I have to scale up 300%+ with GF. Any Advice? Thanks.

billboard print resolution is only 72 - 100 dpi. and you supply artwork at quarter size. You dont need a 6 x 2 meter file at 300 dpi.

they are taking you for a ride, they want you to do all their work.
fight the power!
oh and use lo-res comps for now and let them use their imagination. Who in the hell has time to render all that crap and what happens when they alter stuff drastically?

They're deal is they just want "master files" from me and then they can size/crop to any size they want (billboard, bus, store, etc). So I'm having trouble figuring out how big is big enough. Be much easier to know the actual print sizes but that not an option, unfornately.

tell them you'd rather have final print sizes as you'll need to charge them for buying in new computers to render the fucking things. Not to mention extra memory and enormous backup tapes the size of your fist! time and money and money and time.
I hate it when big agencies pick on small companies.
makes me want to spit!

They're plain-wrong anyway, aren't they? Surely you'd barely need a THIRD of full resolution for a billboard, never mind three TIMES?

Just explained the amount of time it would take to work this big. So they left it up to me on size.
Think I'll base the max size on a bus shelter. Nice clean lines close up. Even the biggest billboard is smaller than that in resultion.
It's tough to work without dimensions, not to mention good composition.

dude, large format printers won't even handle files that big, they always request stuff at a knocked down size otherwise their machines will die.
your client is yanking your doodle.

yeah. indeed

advice from someone who owns large format printers, me >>
the res could be as low as 50dpi full size. you can get away with murder on a billboard. just make your files at 1/4 size and make sure the res is at 200 - 250 dpi so when it's enlarged it will be correct. embed or link images (linking will be faster) and make sure all your fonts are created to outlines. trust me. they are going to use .eps / .pdf / or .tiff when they output it. it's basically like a million dollar desktop printer.
and to this

i run 3 dual xeons & 2 dual G5's with nothing less than 4 gig of ram in them. minumum of 500 gig harddrives in each, some have 2. i can open, rip and print a 2 gig file in about a minute, so..... not a whole lot of machine death over here ; )
what are you running?

(May 22 06, 08:38)no we don't sorry, we typically print larger format things.
i've also got a couple 60" encads that print 1200dpi, and would do a beautiful job but not 2/s
most of our 2/s work is large format.

thanks anyway
