CanWest MediaWorks has stopped the presses on Dose, its youth-oriented free newspaper launched barely a year ago in five cities.
The last print edition of Dose came out Wednesday.
CanWest said it was ending the publication of Dose, but would continue publishing content to its online service, dose.ca, as well as on cellphones.
The company said 50 people would lose their jobs.
"In this very competitive newspaper market, we feel the printed publication will not produce the financial results we expect over the long term," said CanWest MediaWorks CEO Peter Viner in a release.
"However, we see a growing product in the Dose online and mobile offering which we will continue to develop," he said.
Dose began publishing as a free commuter handout in April 2005. It was aimed at the 18-to-34-year-old crowd.
The total daily circulation in Toronto, Ottawa, Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver was 290,000.

it was only a matter of time...
Design was ace but content was for the attention-deficit and for christ sakes, how many of these daily doses of drivle do we need?

I actually just meet the CD there a couple of weeks ago and was really impressed with her and her what she was trying to do with that paper. Shame.

I got to shoot many covers for them, and they were really fun and creative group. They put in a lot of extra hours and effort there. Shame...

It's too bad. It sure was a hell of a lot better than 24... What a train wreck that paper is.

i was wondering what was going on with no new dose.
The ads and logo were done locally by a really great ad firm.

it had the best content for short commute! i really liked it as it offered a lot more interesting issues than Metro and the other commuter papers. We used to get them delivered to our front doors too!
