So I have this problem.. i'm using CS2 and when I launch it, it is sitting at around 65mb of process memory usage... but when I open a file that is just 3megs in size, it jumps the memory usage to half a Gig... sup with that?? Is there anything I can do to this file to make it go down? It's making even editing on this little file like pulling teeth.

memory in Photoshop is annoying for me also. Sometimes it takes a really long time to even save something.

Is your 3meg file a jpeg, or other compressed file format?
If so, you should account for the size an actual 16/24bit image takes up as a pure bitmap in memory - that, with layers, channels and undos soon mounts up!

its just never happened like this before. its a psd with layers, color modes, wacky fonts, folders and crutons

you could try to go into:
>Photoshop preferences>Memory and Image Cache>Maximum Used By Photoshop...
...and increase your setting to allow Photoshop to use more RAM when running...If you have other programs open, those will slow down significantly - try running Photoshop by itself after changing this setting and see what happens when you open your file
(you have to quit Photoshop and reopen it for the change to take effect.)
