What's the best and most effective way of asking your boss if you can be part time or work from home? I'm building a good steady pool of freelance clients, and don't want to turn down their work. I might go independent eventually a year possibly.

"family obligations" is usually a safe bet.

figure out any benefits that this may have for your employer, parking expenses they may pay, that sort of thing.

Large corporations tend to agree more with this than small groups. Flex time I believe they call it.
Work 10 hours per day for 4 days and get off a day per week. You put in the extra 8.
If you are working more than 8 hours a day, you need to find a new line of work. Stand up for yourself. You give people and inch, they'll take a mile. It never fails.
Although, some groups will allow you to work from home once every two weeks and such too. Depends.

if they need you full time, then they will say no... if they don't then they might say yes.
that make sense?

Propose a one day a week test run. This gives you time to set up, and actually start rolling. I did this for one month, then went to three days a week... After a bit you can prove to them that just as much gets done from home as in the office. Eventually you will find a good balance between the two that works for both you and your boss.
