Did anyone else find this article difficult to follow? When he is subdividing the page there is no explanation of why he did what he did. In steps 2-3 he rotated the orientation but I have no idea why.
I'm not really sure of subdividing by a ratio or what the ratio of pages other than A4 are.
It's probably just me. I haven't done print layouts before. I should probably just go buy the Muller Brockman book.

Yeah man, that's way convoluted
Have you been tasked with creating a formal/complex grid structure for this print project? I do print work using grids every day, but you can have well considered results without going to all that trouble.

that looks like a sack of shit to me cos there are no gutters, it doesn't look to be a useable grid whatsoever.

I am just doing it for practice. I don't really see what is the logic or process followed in that article.

I think I'll just ignore it then and get some books. I'm still open to hear an explanation of the images in the article if anyone has one though.

that tutorial will throw you off if you're just looking to explore some grid systems...
I would take a letter/A4 sheet and create a 4 or 6 column grid, with consistent gutters, buffer space around the top, bottom, and sides, and then drop in 3-4 pages worth of copy... just play around with the way your design elements use the grid system, and see what happens.
if it feels balanced, you're probably going in the right direction
