I'm going through the 30,000+ fonts on my system, and I'm realizing about 28,876 of them are utter shite. I'll have to buy some new ones.
I know of the usual suspects (fontshop, lino, veer) to find fonts... but:
Who consistantly produces/distributes the best or most unique work?
Where off the beaten path should I look?

-----eh, you just BUY fonts like that, like you randomly BOUGHT roughly 30k fonts and now you think, "hey! money a plenty! i am just gonna buy a bunch of other fonts like that!"..
Why buy fonts when you don't have projects that require them?
i assume you are fucking rich!

Sometimes I will find fonts I really like and then decide if I will actually use it in the future. Then I buy it. I don't do it for all fonts, of course. Just the ones that are really, really, nice.

ok then.
well i usually go look for a font when the project's there, to fit the style of the ID to be designed. I have had clients that wanted to let me change the font, would be quite annoying if you just paid for it already.

nono. i –have– 30k fonts. i didn't –buy– 30k fonts.
i see the value in buying good stuff, because it'll last. i'm not into freefonts.com anymore :P
for clarification: i have projects that warrant their purchase, that's why i'm looking. i'm trying to gain some knowledge from the good folks here about where they go.
if i was rich, i would have bought the ring my gf liked the other day.
a 10k engagement ring is out of my range though.

Its possible also from Corel Draw, I remember they had cds with thousands and thousands of fonts on them, and many of the bit-stream knockoffs, you could essentially go into fleamarket and get a dated version of Corel Draw 4 back from 1997 and legally get so many fonts (mostly shitty - yes).
I am usually not in a position to buy many fonts since I am a student and I am broke, but I am trying to get shit setup this summer and buy a few. I think I'd rather support the independent foundries by buying them directly. I really like Jigsaw, and the Fedra family at Typotheque, and that site is an awesome resource with lots of info about their fonts. However, I think they are really focusing on pushing Fedra Serif Pro at the moment, so I would say they are not releasing many new typefaces consistently. However they are of the highest quality.
Also Fred Smeijers' foundry OurType has some amazing stuff available, Arnhem is a beautiful text face, and also Versa is quite nice.
Eric Olsen's Process Type Foundry also has many great releases, I recently saw Locator to set text in at really small sizes and it worked suprisingly well.

I would also had Porchez Typofonderie to the list too, the new OpenType Parisine is really nice and definitely unique.

^ I second kelpie's suggestion. My type prof has been setting everything in Gotham for display and Mercury for text (which is similar to Arnhem). The Mercury italic is extremely nice.
