whats the best way to learn actionscript after having a knowledge of the basic operations(tweenin, simple movieclip, general button)
-take a class
-quickstart book
or
-tutorials onlinethanks
- krust0
i tend to just look at other peoples scripts and figure out what stuff does.
altough that may explain why i'm not a great scripter, just an ok one...

I've just started using some online tutorials that are really good...
its only $30 a month to access all their training movies

i've never really liked those books, but , i never really gave them a chance either......I'm a fan of the visuaquickstart books.
the book and the site you guys refered will help alot thanks!!
i try to do the same, Krust, take flash files apart, and put them back together sort of.

i started after being like you and just ripping apart sample files. the visual quick starts are great. there are to many online tuts for free though to pay for anything. after you can do a few tricks the best thing to do is get a job where other better peeps are and act as a sponge. somehow i went from hack designer to a developer level but it took like 5 years of jobs and tuts to do so. it all depends where you want to go with it and how good you can pick up on it.

Yes Moock's book. Very good flow to it. Puts it all together.

i got josh's book, I got colin's book, i got a bazillion books from the 'friends of ed'...
... after watching a few video tutorials - i kinda dumped the books for a while. If you're a visual person... it's nice to have something shown to you rather than reading the instruction manual..
... I tried teaching myself 3dStudio Max via some 'reading' tutorials and got bored quickly...
... then I jumped on some video tutorials... within a few hours I was up to speed on the interface and ready to start 'practicing and exploring'...
... so I recommend trying a video.
Also - as a side note... alot of books are VERY SLOPPY and everyone has a different method - if you're going to learn actionscript... goto the source - Macromedia. Read their books and you'll get the best understanding of Classes, Objects, methods etc... and how they all tie together etc...
... has anyone else found that alot of actionscript books have typo's of bad code? i'll load up the cd and find diff. code etc... very sloppy stuff.

I'm in the same boat and feel like an official macormedia course would be so beneficial - does anyone know if they run any in yorkshire?

Moock's book is awesome. I also took a great advanced actionscript course at SVA with Mathew Richmond from chopping block. He was super organized & smart. I'm still learning but it helped alot... If anyone's in NYC, I totally recommend his courses.

practice. experience. learn as you go. when you need to do something, search for it on the web. find scripts that do what you are looking for, or figure out how to do it through trial and error. after a couple weeks, you will be a master. haha.

yep, it was cont ed. it was actually a weekend class. I'd do a longer one next time (there's one in june that looks good) but at the time this was all i could manage. i think it was around $400. I don't think there were official prereqs.
