so i have my pay review todady, but i dont really know what i should be asking for:
I am 'head' of a design team (only 3 of us). We do motion graphics for tv commercials and broadcast stuff.
The thing is, i'm confused as to what i should be paid for the extra responsibility
Anyone have an idea of the going salary for such a position?

Sorry dude, not for London I don't. But if you guys do solid work, and your clients value design, then by LosAngeles standards I would ask around $120k US. You are what they call an Art Director / Senior Designer.

If a group of people have the same salary, whoever is leading them should get an extra 7% / person, IMO.
I have that system in my firm.

Cheers douglas, i really wish i could ask for that much, but its a small company, there really is no chance...
I wouldnt say i'm 'art director'.
I am head designer, and 'head of design & animation'...
Anyone?
- rasko40
around £35k I would imagine - what are you on now?
- agentfour0
well if your not directing, and you're just the senior designer there, depending on your responsibilities, i would have guessed around 10-20% more than the designer next most senior.
- paddywop0
27k at the moment Rasko, But i took this job as a standard designer and things have progressed from there.
You're estimate is exactly what i was thinking...
- agentfour0
from there i'd definately be going for £32-36k
- paddywop0
i think so too agent4, trouble is, i'm a proper soft bastard when it comes to making demands or negotiations.
Any tips???
- rasko40
start high, say you were looking for £35k and dont give away signs of "I'm trying this on, but I will drop easy"
then see their reaction, see what they have to say, set yourself a minimum that you are happy with, and I mean HAPPY with, not just "umm well ok then" and make sure you dont go below that without them realising that you are likely to leave, and just explain to them that your living costs are getting higher and higher and that you are not being greedy but need the monay and feel that is your worth.
damn I wish it was as easy as it sounds hehe

cheers man, i'll let you know what happens...

if it's not what you were after say so, just be honest about it. most companies play on the fact that we don't like to talk about money. if you aren't a little bit forward you will get the standard £2k pay rise and have to pretend to be grateful.
I think honesty is always best here, explain why you think you are worth that, what you have been bringing to the company and how you are very keen to grow with the firm and stay on long term... if the money is reflective of your position.

ah, pay reviews, if only....
- agentfour0
Yeh what rasko said. If theyre good and you dont act weak they'll pay you what you're worth. If theyre fucked and you dont back yourself, they pay you what they think you will settle for. So dont take any less than what you think you're worth to the company. And they will respect you for being honest and standing up for yourself.
I've been a pussy in the past, and they took full advantage of everyone in the company who was. But as soon as i backed myself and threatened to leave they threw figures at me to stay............. i still left.
Worst employers ever!
- paddywop0
well they offered me 29k, i told them 35k, and we settled on 32k
Suits me...
