I will be in the area in late May, is it worth spending a weekend around? Is the town nice? What about surrounding villages? Are there pretty cliffs or beaches nearby?..

bay area is cool for a mooch.
world class single track mtb trails nearby if that's your bag.
head out west towards Cowbridge and to the coast there for cliffs and 'beaches'
failng that you could always go to Bristol. :D

I hear it's really nice. I was close to moving their with my girlfriend for her post graduate, but it didn't pan out. :(

Thanks, guys. I will be on my way back from a concert to the airport, it's either Cardiff or Birmingham. Heck, I have to consider Bristol as well!

If you've got time in the future.. head down West Wales to the Gower and so some camping/surfing in the Summer.
As for Cardiff, great old 'town' the best pubs are the old looking ones up St Mary's Street and around the Castle.
Mill lane by the Marriot is great for a stroll and plenty of food places and bars. Make sure you explore all the Arcades especially the Castle arcade opposite the Castle. Also hit Cranes, the best guitar and music shop anywhere I've been.

if you're about for the night, clwb ifor bach by the castle usually has a gig on, or buffalo bar down the end of Queen street is a hep joint with good Dj's and live stuff too. mill lane and st mary's is okay, but a bit too commercial and booze fuelled these days for my liking. the bay is worth a visit, but beyond chain bars and the glee club there's not much elese to do unless there's a gig on at teh point or coal exchange. it's a good city , but don't expect the size or buzz of somewhere like bristol or birmingham - it's chilled but friendly :D

indeed, I am sure Ryanair had a hand in forcing out Air Wales by poaching their most lucrative route and then when Ryanair tries to bully the airport to reduce it's landing rates (eventhough its less that other airports) they just pull the contract - almost a month after Air Wales goes bust with the loss of jobs etc etc.
Aer Arann are taking over the Cardiff-Dublin route. It won't be as cheap but will be similar to what Air Wales was.
