when starting a freelance business, what have you guys done to promote yourself?
what do you think was most effective?

write your name on pencils. give them out to the kids that you want to be friends with

email people and tell them that their website sucks, and then offer your services.

I just started myself. Interested in what comments may come.
I've been getting a lot of referral work lately, but need to find the time to do some self promo stuff.

make sure your showing work you're really proud of. Then try to find people who will really appreciate it and may be able to add something to the quality of your vision (end resulting product you make).
In the early times your goal is to build awareness of your work and build your reputation within your ideal target market.
It took me about 1-2 years to get things going. Try not to waste a lot of money also!

I agree with radar. this is sort of like asking women if they want to fuck. one out of a hundred will says yes

Start with family and friends. Give them your business card and tell them for every person they refer to you you'll give them 10% of the projects cash.
I did this for 2 years and I was surprised how hard my friends worked to get me work. It was easy money for them for doing really close to nothing.
