Print Q – Transparency

Ok... Got a document with a printer at the moment. They have just emailed me saying they have a problem with a page that has a transparency. It's created with InDesign, and according to the printer this always causes a problem 'sending it to the RIP' (whatever that means) when transparencies are used.
He recommended I try it myself by creating a PDF and I have no problems, the transp worked fine.
Are they just being lazy? What's the score?

They are right, Rip is the process where some software separates the files you send into cmyk before it makes the plates for the offset machine. Indesign transparency can screw it up somehow. Just make a hi-res pdf and send it again

Sounds reasonable. We seem to supply all our artwork in PDF these days. Much safer.

And check in the Preflight before you export it to pdf (1.4), it shows any problems you might have with your document.

Thanks guys, good advice.
I'll have to bear this in mind in the future.
