If you're not having a huge load of links you could probably get by with frames... otherwise if you have a long list you'll get a horrible scrollbar up the middle...
php inlcudes probably the easiest... swapping out an image with javascript might require all the images to be the same size... otherwise they try and scale to fit the original image that is there.

you could also just use a swap image javascript behaviour set to onclick

Create two frames, a left and right one. left links target to frame on the right. this can also be iframes.
best thing would be php includes, you won't need frames for it. it is a LOT easier then it sounds!
