I made a childlike error a while back and didn't renew my domain, unfortuntaley for me someone bought the domain (one of those generic 'search the internet' sites) - is there any way of tracking when it comes up for renewal or anything like that? I'm gutted I didn't renew it.

Get your reg. company to email you a few months in advance.
Or, buy a calendar.

use http://www.whois.sc and look for the renewal date.

Contact your registrar, they might be still holding the domain. Don't seem desperate, that'll up the price. Still, they've been in the business and know you're desperately trying not to seem desperate in your first email..
If it went somewhere like http://www.sedo.com/ somebody might demand huge money for it.

I've never used them, but there are companies that will watch a domain for a price and scoop it up as soon as it's available (like, within minutes or maybe even seconds). One of them is called http://www.snapnames.com and might be worth your money. Good luck, and lesson learned I imagine, eh? Those link farms are the worst. I'd rather lose a domain to somebody who does something cool with it.
