are you looking for stand-alone, or a plug-in you can use in a sequencer?

get a microphone and study up on old DJ Jazzy Jeff albums.
Run DMC too.

propellerheads Rebirth would be pretty easy to just download and start using.
ableton might mean going through tutorials.
dunno if you're just after a quick fix or not mate

I tested out some pretty decent drum software, I can't remember the name but will look at home. It was cheap, just some random program i found on the web.

theres loads of sites that have .wav or .aiff archives of sounds from drum machines through the years.
download a set of sounds and create your own little drumbeats in flash or make a wee drum machine.
are you just looking to create one beat for something?

iDrums for the Mac is super easy and cheap. They even offer a free demo download.

No offense Bill, but Ableton drum machine is really bad, don't get me wrong I use ableton all the time, but with Linplug's RM IV
I would recommend you to get
RE-Birth wich is now free if you can't spend any money. (im not sure how well it runs on OSX though) wich emulates real drum machine hardware and the ease of the step sequencer, (wich reason has on its drum machine as well)
http://www.rebirthmuseum.com/Battery would be your best bet, but it's not cheap and it's aimed to the Pro user.
Works as VST / AU / and stand alone as well..

none taken
i guess its all about the application, i find ableton (drum machine) sufficient for my needs... song writing, pretty simple stuff.
