What do I need to do/install to make local PHP files display in Safari. Currently all they do is show the code instead of showing the layout.

sounds like you need to enable php.
check your httpd.conf.
add index.php to if that's not the case.
and make sure:
LoadModule php4_module libexec/httpd/libphp4.so
AddModule mod_php4.cas well as :
AddType application/x-httpd-php .phprestart webserver.

okay cool it seemed a bit over my head at first, especially since I don't have BBEdit o.O but I do have TextWrangler. Took me a while to figure out how to find the damn file but it's all good now. Thanks fellas.
