I'm going through the Zend PHP certification program - basically involves reading a book, doing practice test and setting up online testing. Wondering if others have done similar certification for other languages/platforms , ie. MySWL, Actionscript - and if you've found the certification valuable as either contractor or employee or both?
thanks

it's only worth it if you get someone to pay you to use those skills

I agree with version3.
I'm getting an official certification in MCSE and MCAD this summer for the sole purpose my work will pay for tests and then bump my salary up considerably.
I think they are "nice to haves" but nothing beats a solid portfolio and application of knowledge in my opinion.

from the employer's point of view though, do you find that being certified counts for anything?
currently I'm doing front end web development - Flash/Actioscript and DHMTL - with some light server srcipting and DB admin. I intend to do more serverside production than front end so the certification would go toward a position I intend to get hired for.

i think it can only help. If an employer is serious about yr skills they have a test for you at interview? So maybe the certificate will help you get to interview and in the larger companies more $$$$
if someone else is paying its worth while doing

not worth it in a way, examples of work will always out weigh any prized certificate
