How does the pairing work in G5 Towers?
Can I add 2Gb (2x1Gb) to a system with 512mb (2x256)?
Or does it have to be paired like for like?

I hope this helps...
I've had no problems with
2 x 256MB and
2 x 1GBSo I think, yes?

Cool, thanks.
That's what I thought. I only had a slight concern because it crashed Friday evening while I was running Cinebench 9.5, thought it might be a memory conflict.
It's done fine this morning so hopefully all will be well!

and 2x 1gb

Although, having said that it crashed again. So I took the 2x256 out, left it with 2x1Gb and it crashed again.
Grrr...

G5 uses Dual Channel memory or DDR. so you can add 2x256 and 2x1g if you like you just need to make sure that you have them in the correct slots on the MB. 1&2 are one channel 3&4 are another channel and so on.
Maybe its crashing because its a MAC? ;)

also it all needs to be the same speed (ex: DDR400) if you happened to buy it form a non Apple authorized reseller.

Thanks.
From looking in system profiler, the slots are number 0, 1, 2 etc...
So they'll have to pair up 0 & 1, 2 & 3, right?!
I'm pretty good with the IT side of computers, but I've never had this sort of problem before.
I was on the verge of sending it back, but I'm gonna do a format and re-installation first, see if that helps.
I've already tried swapping the memory around and using different configs to troubleshoot all the possibilities.
Very annoying.
