usually i think it uses a mono-spaced font [e.g. courier new] so the text representing the image isnt distorted..
i guess you can use any font, so long its monospaced - theres a lot of nice ones out there, sure youll find something
also look around, i think i downloaded a small exe that converted images to ascii before for a project

I'm also planning to use this for a giant poster. Using different kind of logo and letterforms to form several images or titles

sorry, i cant find itd, was a few years ago
well looks like youve got some work to do then if youre going to use logos/etc
i know there is also some sort of software that figures out the average colour of an image, so you can use it to construct a larger image (like a pixel) - many posters use this often used effect - nothing new
