a list of words using every letter pair combination. useful if you're kerning an entire typeface. print it out, circle the problem pairs, adjust, repeat...

i always remember something a typography prof told us a school...
"no rules; just make it look good."

that kern king thing is pretty nice
i'm not looking for anything in particular, it's just that my typography class in school was terrible and i constanly wonder if my "eyeballing it" system isn't what it should be or if i'm breaking some ancient typography laws or something
like for instance, are there rules about having letters touch each other?

Best advice I ever got was from my professor. He said look at your text as forms and not words or letters... by doing so you see the gaps and awkward spaces. If you have problems seeing past the words try turning the text upside down or blurring your vision slightly.

good advice, horton, just wondering if there's some knowledge that would make me better or if i'm missing something

i don't think the answers for serifs are displaying correctly in the flash, but here you go.

This may seem dumb-ass, but in addition to blurring your eyes, I can usually pick things out by zooming out and in....
As fast as I can.

scarabin, have you ever heard the thing about imagining water filling the space between the letters?
like if you could fill the negative space between the letters with water, from baseline to cap height, if the letters are properly spaced, the amount of water would be the same between each letter. not precise, of course, but just something to think about when you're looking at it.

Isn't it awesome when you catch something in public with horrible kerning? I love that shit. I'm like... "YO look how bad that fucking kerning is!!!" And me and my design savvy friends all laugh. And then my girlfriend refuses to sleep with me that night.
