A little knowledge doesn't hurt but stuff that serious should be left to the proffesionals.
I am a designer and have seen other designers trying to programme stuff.

I know I can learn it. I'm just not sure it's in the best interest for me or him. Is a designer ever going to be as good at coding as someone who loves programming and who's background fits that profile? I majored in digital art in college. One of our requirements was to take the introductory programming course in visual basic. All us art kids got a good laugh about how bad we did in the class.

It's a double-edged sword.
I do both.
I will guarantee you if you love design (like I do) and you pick up programming (like I did) you'll miss it.
I loved programming before I made the major switch though, so it was easier for me.
