Grayscale calculations

anybody do their grayscale or grayscale to duotone img prep using calculations to combine 2 channels first - it seems to be a nicer effect at soft-proof, but never sent something like this print

but if it's printing as greyscale it's only going to be the single plate and %'s of the black/ 1C?
if its going to CMYK or screen use i could understand why work the greys.
or maybe i'm not understanding? i usually go to adjustments/ desaturate and tweak rgbs for greyscale conversion.

well, what i had done that seemed nice on screen to start, was adjust calculations, then grayscale, then duoton, then convert duoton to cmyk for a 4 color job ... i am sure i could get a very similar result messing with rgb values before conversion, i just hit upon this new approach adn wondered what people had done with it
