well I go through the same thing, everyone works from photos, mostly it seems, and all these fine artists use projections and all that.. i used to think it was all impure - then i started doing design and my soapbox on purity got blown out from under my feet.

some people say even dutch masters used some sort of transfer machine with lenses, so that they could look at the model and the surface at the same time. like drawing over something.

I'd image there are thousands of artists making a living. That might depend on your definition of "art', though.
