Bon soir, I've just changed host to Dreamhost [who seem OK btw]. I lost my blog in the process but it's made me think...What do you reckon of a site just made from wordpress or similar, why don't people do this instead of having a 'website'? I'm thinking of it but don't really know anything about anything so advice would be just splendid. Muchos Gracias

wordpress' layout is nice... alot of blogger type stuff is great too... if you're not a 'designer'/'artist'... whatever... and you're just using the web to //enlighten everyone on your life and opinion... :)... then sure, wordpress'll do jus' fine.

well I'm an artist, I wouldn't say designer as such, not web anyway. My site at the mo is just a frame with images opening in the main frame so it's hardly showing skills ororiginal, although it is functional. What I don't get is..when I use dreamweaver for example, I have a file thats stored on my comp and one on the server. With wordpree or any blog, whare is the security / backup...IE I dont have anything on my PC so what if I want to change host, how do I keep my blog etc etc...see where I'm going?

in your control panel there should be an option for exporting your database and all its info into like a hundred different commonly used formats

you should be able to just export your shit and use it anywhere

eh... first off... I usually use a client of some sort to upload my files - i keep dreamweaver local for quick editting etc...

... it's really all about how 'hands on' you wanna be with all of it. Wordpress sounds like a good fit for you as you're looking to do a simple solo info page - I see no need to go all out and build from scratch if a service has already templated what you want...

... it's all about what you're trying to accomplish - if you're looking to do some serious custom work... templated sites probably aren't what you need.

If it's effective for your purposes - use wordpress. 'nuff said. :)
