So I had a long train journey this week and picked up Design Week for the journey.
For the first time I read it cover to cover and found that I was heavily ingrossed in some of the subject matter. Namely an article written by Rick Poyner on the influence of Modernism in todays Graphic Design. He believe's we are in a state of Neo-Modernism. Using examples of current design agencies and their work.
It's strange, but I have studied (only on a light basis) design and art history but never thought of where we are at the moment.
Design Week also had a piece on Tomato and where they are now (I seem to remeber some people asking where/what they were up to).
I was impressed by this current publication and it's content. Keep up the good work, and get Poyner back in!!

Really? I haven't read that for a few years...

Yeah I generally flick through it to find out the latest on certain aspects of "everyday" design. But was surprisingly impressed with this edition. The only thing I would of liked was longer feature articles and a little more depth.

i've always felt that design week is more like a newsletter than a magazine. it's not quite as academic as EYE or selective as Creative Review (CR) but it's still good for jobs and stuff and for catching up on what's new on a weekly basis. It's very business-led which is a good contrast to some of the other mags on the market who report more craft-based articles.

If it's the first time you've picked it up for a while then you've accidentally struck lucky mate, cause in our studio we get it every week, and every week is usually the same load of bollocks with the odd execution namely the 'Adrian Shaunessy articles'
However the Rick Poyner on Modernism and Tomato where are they now articles make for good reading.
I'm currently uninspired by the british industry mags at the moment, CR and graphic seem to mirror each other on content and find I only seem to buy either out of habit, which I must stop as it is burning a sizable whole in my pocket, althoughI recently acquired...
8vo — On the outside
http://www.magmabooks.com/conten…Which granted is a fantastic book, which I found a real inspiration, but not worth it's cover price £32.50, which brings me on to the annoyance of overpriced design books. I looked at my collection of design related books and thought in horror at what I must have spent in the last year (at least £1,000 worth, at least) but apparently you can't put a price on knowledge, well, so I tell the wife!!

Agreed, perhaps it was a lucky hit but I thought the articles may become more interesting.
Grafik I feel is over priced and I pick it up when I am in WHSmith have a flick and if it is relevent to me or has an interesting article then I will purchase. CR - I got a years subscription as a leaving present from my last co.
I looked at that 8vo book but the size of it would piss me off and the price is a little steep.

I've started doing that and totally agree on the price thing £7 for a hand full of articles is wrong especially if you are targeting student/gradutes as potential regular buyers.8vo book again I must agree for the number of pages I do think the size is too small, it is awkward to hold/turn, but 8vo are the reason I fell in love with design as my brother use to go to the Hacienda in the 80's and one day brought home the Hacienda seventh birthday poster which hypnotised me even at such a young age (12)!!
He has still got it and wont let me have it, the bastard, he isn't a designer and doesn't have an opinion on the design of it, he says it reminds him of happy days, nostalgia is a fucker!!

Yeah got that smoker phat' I lent it to someone at work recently and he's manged to rip the spine and put this weird groove in the cover, now I'm not that precious but it annoys the fuck out of me, and it is a tresured book both for content and my passion for Josef Muller-brockmann's work. Infact I have got most of the good book from Niggli publishers my most prized is this puppy...

I'm half way through it and it makes such a difference when working. The only problem is it can take a bit of working out, so bear with it...

Is that because of the translation?
Brockmann is a true modernist

Technically speaking it is out of date, the way he speaks in Picas and a couple of other type terms which although relivant you barely hear in todays climate, but the principles of the grid in design make it an important book, best on the subject, I have got 'The Designer and the Grid' which is also good, but the Brockmann Grid systems is the daddy!
