how can I crack open a pdf that has some kind of protection, whereby it opens but the embedded font is replaced.
Yes I have a type sheet I want a few letters from to test out and get go ahead before purchase

I know this prob won't work, but did you try it in Illustrator?

yes but thats what I mean, the embedded font is being replaced, they have done something clever with it.

hmm maybe thanks... it doesn't haver a password on it tho..
I opened as a high res in photoshop and cut out the letters from there, should do for now.

that's funny that it doesn't substitute the type in ps!
if you open at 1200 dpi or so, you could do the "convert selection to paths thing" for outlines, too

does it open in acrobat well?
as in the fonts are fine?

yes, just in illy it reverts the type to something else:
The font **** is missing. Affected text will be displayed using a substitute font.
To preserve appearance, some text has been outlined.
